The Prescription Epidemic

Prescription drugs have become the most popular way for your child to enter the world of drug abuse and addiction. Each year, more and more parents unwillingly become their teen's drug dealer. Today's prescription drug epidemic is three times deadlier than the cocaine epidemic of the late eighties, with more than 10 overdose deaths for every 100,000 children. By senior year of high scool, one in five teens will have abused prescription painkillers.

What you can do:

  • Make sure you throw away all old preceiption medications, and store medication in a place that's not easily accessible.

  • Talk to your teen about the dangers of abusing prescription medications, if you are safeguarding your house - let them know why.

  • If you suspect your teen of abusing or selling drugs, install a hidden camera and schedule an intervention if necessary.

Other ways your child may be at risk:

  • Protect your child from cyber-bullying by promoting healthy social media habits and installing parental and/or monitoring on your home computer.

  • Keep your children busy - encourage them to join social, athletic or community-sponsored groups. This will help boost their confidence, and decrease their chance of exposure to gangs or other types of illicit activities.
